A Statement on the Vandalism of the PJTC Mural

In May, our community came together to transform a wall at Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center, a wall that had itself been defaced with antisemitic graffiti earlier this year, into a mural of hope and solidarity. With muralist Miriam Hellmann, the Art Over Hate Collective, religious school students, and volunteers from across Los Angeles, we raised funds and built something meant to answer hate with hope.

On Friday, July 24, that mural was vandalized again with vile antisemitic graffiti.

We are heartbroken, but we are not surprised. This is not the first time our community has faced this kind of hate, and unfortunately it may not be the last. But it will not be the last time we respond with kindness, either.

SKY Fund was not founded to fight antisemitism. We were founded to help kids rebuild after losing their homes. But when our community is targeted, especially the same community that helped us build a symbol of hope out of a painful moment, we show up. That is what SKY Fund has always been about.

We stand with Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center and with Rabbi Josh Ratner, who has said this act will not define this community. We are grateful to local law enforcement who are investigating this as a hate crime, and to the many neighbors, partners, and supporters who have reached out in the days since.

The mural will be restored. Our commitment to this community has not changed.
